On November 7, two representatives of the AgriSens project, Christopher Conrad and Jan Lukas Wenzel, were guests at the 1st Bernburg Irrigation Day of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. Irrigated agriculture in Germany is facing a dilemma: on the one hand, the need for irrigation is increasing (climate change, security of supply, market requirements), on the other hand, less and less water is available for irrigation (climate change, environmental aspects). This results in a variety of challenges for irrigation farmers, other institutions and, of course, science. These include adaptation to climate change, the increasing scarcity of water resources, the use of ineffective traditional irrigation methods with excessive consumption of water resources, erosion risks and risks of chemical pollution of water bodies. During the workshop, the actual problems and challenges of irrigated agriculture in Saxony-Anhalt were discussed and solutions for sustainable irrigation management were developed. The AgriSens use case 4 “Irrigation” reported in a presentation and a poster on the potential of digital approaches and remote sensing and modeling methods for site-specific estimation of irrigation requirements. A special focus in the discussions and workshops was on the differences between irrigation and plant water requirements. We were able to gain many new ideas for future research aspects and make interesting contacts and are already looking forward to the next Bernburg Irrigation Workshop in 2025.
