The 8th annual CAWa Summer School “Linking scientific knowledge of water and land resources management into decision making support in Central Asia”

The CAWa-Green project in the frame of the “Green Central Asia Initiative” organized the 8th Summer School “Linking scientific knowledge of water and land resources management into decision making support in Central Asia” in Almaty from 11th to 20th of July 2022. Nineteen participants from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan learned innovative methods and tools for the analysis and monitoring of water and land resources in Central Asia. The Summer School was hosted by the Kazakh-German University (DKU), organized by the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), with lecturers from the GFZ, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), DKU and Institute of Geography of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

From the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg side, two lecturers Dr. Ing. Muhammad Usman and Matthias Völkel delivered lectures on the topics related to WUEMoCA online tool (https://wuemoca.geo.uni-halle.de/app/), QGIS, Google Earth Engine and Python for spatial data analyses. On 15th of July, a special guest visited the summer school, the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Ophelia Nick. The Students had the chance to get into a discussion on global food security with the State Secretary.
