We are pleased to share the successful completion of the online workshop titled “Green Central Asia – Phase 2: Strengthening Regional Collaboration on Water Resource Monitoring and Management,” held on 28th February 2025. This virtual meeting brought together experts, hydromet services, and stakeholders from Central Asia to discuss advancements in water resource monitoring, drought management, and regional collaboration. Facilitated by Alexander Nikolayenko & Mr. Arman Kozhakeldiyev (GIZ Bishkek & Astana), the workshop began with an overview of its objectives, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in addressing water resource challenges. The session highlighted the critical role of collaborative efforts in ensuring sustainable drought and water management across Central Asia.
A key focus of the workshop was the launch of the new project phase, GCA-II, and updates on the Droughtmap-ASB tool. Dr. Muhammad Usman and Matthias Völkel from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg provided an in-depth overview of the GCA-II project, outlining its planned activities and goals. They also shared updates on the Droughtmap-ASB tool, showcasing its features, recent improvements, and plans for stakeholder involvement. The tool, designed to enhance drought monitoring and management, represents a significant step forward in supporting regional water resource management efforts.
The workshop also featured a presentation on monitoring water resources in Central Asia from space, delivered by Dr. Tilo Schöne and Najib Kakar (GFZ Potsdam). This session highlighted the potential of satellite technology to provide accurate and timely data for water resource monitoring, offering valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. Following this, a discussion on major reservoirs for irrigation in Central Asia was facilitated by Najib Kakar. This exchange of ideas underscored the importance of tailored solutions to address the unique challenges faced by the region.
The workshop concluded with closing remarks and a discussion on the next steps for advancing regional collaboration and implementing the GCA-II project. We extend our gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions and look forward to continued collaboration in advancing sustainable water resource management in Central Asia.
